Choosing Column Width for Address Shorthand
How to measure the abbreviation space your ceremony needs before commissioning a custom ledger layout.
When operators abbreviate wallet addresses on paper, the shorthand length varies. A four-character prefix works for some setups; others need eight characters plus a checksum digit. Commissioning a template without measuring this first often leads to cramped columns or wasted page width.
Measure During a Real Ceremony
Do not estimate from memory. During your next offline balance check, write each address shorthand exactly as you normally would — including any separator characters or checksum notation. Count the characters for the longest abbreviation you use.
Add two character spaces for margin. If your longest shorthand is eight characters, plan for ten character widths in the column.
Single vs. Multiple Address Columns
Operators tracking more than one wallet per ceremony need separate columns or a single wide column with row dividers. Wide single columns suit ceremonies where you read balances sequentially. Separate columns work when two signers transcribe different wallets simultaneously.
Triplicate formats reduce available width because carbon layers add bulk. Test on plain paper folded to mimic triplicate thickness before finalizing dimensions.
Paper Stock Consideration
Pencil on our standard 80gsm ledger paper produces characters roughly 2.5mm wide at typical handwriting size. Ten character widths need approximately 25mm of column space plus gutter. Bound volumes with narrow gutters may require slightly tighter abbreviation rules.
When to Request a Fitting
